Integrating SmartSpeaker into Canvas Using LTI 1.3

As an admin, you can integrate SmartSpeaker into their Canvas Learning Management System (LMS). Before integrating SmartSpeaker, please ensure that you have full access to Canvas as an admin. If you have any questions about the steps in this guide, please contact your dedicated Account Manager.

Getting Your JSON String

Before adding SmartSpeaker to Canvas, use the email link sent by your Account Manager to sign up for a SmartSpeaker account. You will need this account to get your JSON string and then add SmartSpeaker to Canvas.

1. Log in to Canvas as an admin.
2. Navigate to SmartSpeaker.
3. In the sidebar, select Configurations > Integration Settings.
   
4. In the Select Integration drop-down menu, select LTI 1.3.
5. Enter the required information:
   • ISS: https://canvas.instructure.com 
   • OIDC Endpoint: https://canvas.instructure.com/api/lti/authorize_redirect
   • JWKS Endpoint: https://canvas.instructure.com/api/lti/security/jwks 
     
6. Click Download LTI 1.3 JSON. 
   
7. Select the Course Navigation check box and then click Download. The JSON String will be downloaded.
   

Adding SmartSpeaker to Canvas

The instructions below will allow users to create a new Developer Key that can be used to generate a Deployment ID for the YuJa Enterprise Connector for LTI 1.3 in Canvas.

1. Log in to Canvas as an admin.
2. In the sidebar, select Admin > Developer Keys.
3. Click Developer Keys > + LTI Key.
   
4. In the Key Name field, enter SmartSpeaker.
5. In the Method drop-down menu, select Paste JSON.
6. In the LTI 1.3 Configuration field, copy and paste the JSON text that you noted down from step 6 of Getting Your JSON String. The Redirect URls field will automatically be filled.
   
7. (Optional) To disable the LTI tool on the course navigation bar by default, add the following parameter under the "text": "smart-speaker", row.
   • "default": "disabled",
     
8. Click Save.
   
9. Locate the SmartSpeaker developer key toggle and turn on the State toggle.
10. Click View in Canvas Apps. A new Canvas window will be opened.
    
11. Click the pencil icon.
    
12. Change the status to Available, then click Save.
    
13. Click Copy Client ID and save the value somewhere for later use.
    

Adding SmartSpeaker to a Course

Once you have added SmartSpeaker to Canvas, you can add the SmartSpeaker LTI link to specific courses. 

1. Log into Canvas as an Admin and select your course.
2. Select Settings. 

3. Select the Apps tab > View App Configurations.

   

4. Click + App.
   
5. In the Configuration Type drop-down field, select By Client ID.
6. In the Client ID field, enter the the Client ID obtained in step 13 of Adding SmartSpeaker to Canvas, and then click Submit. 
   
7. Click Install.
